Othello - Bard in the BotanicsBard in the Botanics

“Perdition catch my soul
But I do love thee! and when I love thee not,
Chaos is come again.

When Othello, the much-lauded Moorish General of the Venetian Army, marries the beautiful Desdemona, he sets in motion a chain of events that will bring him to disaster.

Their love is thrown tragically out of balance when Othello’s erstwhile friend and confidante, Iago, begins an insidious campaign of disparagement and treachery, determined to destroy them both –

“So out of her own goodness make the net
That shall enmesh them all”

With its racing, concentrated plot and intense dramatic detail, Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most heartbreaking tragedies, a tale of uncontrollable jealousy, deception and murder driven by one of theatre’s greatest villains.
